Vologda Drama Theatre
Description
The Vologda Drama Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Russia. Its history reaches back to the late 18th century, when a touring opera company captivated the city's residents with its performances and sparked a cultural movement in Vologda. One by one, theatres began to appear — home theatres, school theatres, serf theatres. Performances, both dramatic and operatic, were staged, sometimes with plays, librettos and music written by local authors. Touring companies continued to visit the city, and Vologda professional theatre was established in 1849.
For a long time the theatre has maintained a leading position in the cultural life of Vologda. It carefully preserves and develops the best traditions of Russian psychological theatre. Today's theatre company is a strong ensemble of actors, combining highly experienced stage masters with young performers who have already made their mark.
The theatre's programming is focused primarily on Russian and international classics, focused on preserving the finest theatrical traditions and the high standard of acting.
For its long-standing creative and public work, the theatre has received the Order of the Badge of Honour (1974), Certificates of Merit from the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR, and other distinctions.
In 1991, the Vologda Drama Theatre initiated and was the driving force behind the creation of the international festival « The Voices of History" — a showcase of the professional theatre performances staged in the historic architectural setting of the unique open-air Vologda Kremlin.
