Spaso-Prilutsky St. Dmitry Monastery
Spaso-Prilutsky St. Dmitry Monastery
The Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery was founded in 1371 north of Vologda, on the road to Beloozero, on the left bank of the river near the village of Vyapryagovo. It was established by Dmitry Prilutsky, abbot of St. Nicholas Monastery in Pereslavl-Zalessky, a revered Russian saint and heavenly patron of Vologda. He built a wooden church and adjacent wooden cells for monks at the monastery. The peasants who owned these lands - "the honorable men Ilya and Isidor Vyapryag - gladly donated them to the Saint."
The Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery enjoyed great respect from Grand Princes Ivan III, Vasily III, and Ivan IV.
The monastery complex includes several churches and structures: the Savior Cathedral, Bell Tower, Ascension Gate Church, All Saints Church, St. Catherine's Church, Dormition Church, as well as utility buildings, walls and towers constructed as a proper fortress.
