Sophia Cathedral
Sophia Cathedral
The Vologda Cathedral complex includes a group of churches: Sophia Cathedral (16th century) and Resurrection Cathedral (18th century), as well as the cathedral bell tower.
All the rich and glorious history of diocesan life was connected precisely with these churches. They served as places of ministry for Vologda's most reverend bishops, were visited by royalty, and hosted solemn worship services. At the beginning of the 20th century, the situation changed - the churches were taken away from communities of believers. For many long Soviet years, the cathedral churches were used for purposes other than worship, and the Savior's words "My house shall be a house of prayer" (Luke 19:46) were systematically erased from people's minds.
Since 2007, Sophia Cathedral has been under joint use by the Vologda Museum (VGIAHMZ) and the Vologda Diocese. During summer feast days, worship services began to be held there. On October 15, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia signed a decree granting Sophia Cathedral the status of a cathedral. From that moment on, regular services began in Sophia Cathedral (every Sunday and during summer feast days).
