Cathedral Complex
Cathedral Complex
This is the most ancient square of Veliky Ustyug, the spiritual center of the city. There is a complex of ancient temples and a small public park with a monument to S. Dezhnev. The dominant feature of the square is the Assumption Cathedral with a bell tower. The wooden Assumption Cathedral was first mentioned in 1290. It was built in stone in 1558. The cathedral has preserved a unique wall painting - a portrait gallery of bishops of Veliky Ustyug and Totem. In the summer, access to the bell tower, which offers a panorama of the city, is open. Prokopievsky Cathedral is an active cathedral. The main treasure of the temple is a 5-tier carved gilded iconostasis. The temple was consecrated in honor of Procopius the Righteous, Ustyug wonderworker and patron saint of the town.
