Ustye

Ustye village is one of the favorite summer recreation places for Vologda residents and guests of the Vologda Region. It is located 70 kilometers from Vologda on the picturesque banks of the Kubena River, where nature, silence and centuries-old traditions merge into one.

Historically, Ustye was an important trade and craft center, and today it attracts tourists with its picturesque landscapes, clean air and rich cultural heritage. There are old churches, wooden houses with carved platbands, and in the vicinity you can see Kubenskoe Lake - one of the largest in the Vologda Oblast.

In summer people come to Ustye to enjoy a quiet vacation by the water, fishing and walks along forest trails. Festivals of folk traditions are held here, and local craftsmen keep the secrets of ancient crafts. This is a place where you want to come back for peace and real Russian provincial atmosphere.

The village of Ustye is considered the oldest settlement in the Vologda region. It was formed around the 14th century, the exact date of its foundation is unknown. The heyday of the county is associated with the construction of the Mariinsky water system connecting Kubenskoe Lake and St. Petersburg.

The village was in great demand among merchants: since the 18th century Ustyansk (Ivanovo) fairs have been held here in winter on Fridays, and in summer on Sundays there were celebrations. Goods were shipped from here to other cities.

In the 20th century, crafts, fishing, and hunting began to develop actively in the village of Ustye. Lace, pottery and horn crafts brought fame to the area. There were 20 factories operating here, including a sawmill, a glass mill, an oil mill and a brick factory. Along with trade and industry, education, culture, and medicine have been widely developed. Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great visited the village at one time. To mark the arrival of Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich, a memorial sign has been erected on the embankment of the Kubena River.
