Belozersky Kremlin
In 1487 a grand new fortress was built by order of the Sovereign of All Russia Ivan III "on Beleozer in Kargolom" ten miles from the old town, as if symbolizing the unprecedented strengthening of the Moscow state. The remains of a mighty fortification in Belozersk are impressive even today: it is a ringed earth rampart with wooden log structures inside ("log pillar") more than 1000 meters long and about 15 meters high.
